SDV hopes that everyone experiencing the emergency and damage caused by Hurricane Ian is safe and sound. There are certain things policyholders can do during and after natural disasters that will help them more easily recover on insurance claims. Here are some of the most important things to do:
- Take pre-storm detailed photos of your property (inside and out) so that you have a basis to demonstrate the condition of your premises prior to any damage. Make sure to take photos of any preparations you made to prevent damage, such as installing shutters, plywood over windows, sand bands, etc. Keep all receipts of purchased materials used to protect your property.
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible to begin the claims process. The sooner the claims process begins, the sooner the claim can be resolved.
- Document your losses, in writing as well as through detailed photographs.
- Before discarding any damaged items and materials, contact the adjuster to make sure it’s ok. Ask that any verbal instructions you receive be recorded in writing, such as an e-mail, text message, or in the claim file.
- If your insurer allows for this, sign up for text alerts from your insurer to quickly receive claims updates.
- Keep a claims diary, detailing the dates of when telephone calls and emails are exchanged, including the name and position of the person you communicated with.
